Almost everyone has been touched in some way by cancer.
Whether it’s a family member or friend, or you have been a patient, it would be difficult to find someone who has no understanding of the devastation that a cancer diagnosis can trigger.
This year, the Gordon Hospital Foundation is hoping that its fifth annual Golf Classic, scheduled for Oct. 25 at Barnsley Gardens in Adairsville, can go a long way in helping local cancer patients. That’s because the event is being held to raise funds for the hospital’s cancer services, and in preparation for the addition of a linear accelerator, which will provide radiation treatment.
“Right now, patients needing radiation therapy are having to go out of town for this service,” said Judy Jackson, director of development services for Gordon Hospital. “It’s hard on them and the family, because they have to arrange transportation, and then travel when they probably don’t feel well. By adding this service line, they can have the treatment right here at Gordon Hospital minutes from their own home.
“This is our fifth year, and we are excited about having another great golf event. We think the setting and the time of year will be a big draw for area golfers, and of course, the cause is so worthwhile and will benefit our entire community.”
The location of the tournament, Barnsley Gardens, is one of the most prestigious courses in this area. The General, as the course as been dubbed, is a Jim Fazio-designed championship golf course. Ranked No. 5 among public and resort courses in the state by Golf Week in 2007, this par-72 layout is a true test for golfers of any skill level. In addition, the course has been ranked in the top 20 in the state by Golf Digest for three years running.
“We know that the economy is tight, but this is a great cause, and it’s a great day of golf and a way to improve the healthcare of our community with every stroke,” Jackson said.
The cost of entry in the tournament is $150 per player. Space is limited to 120 golfers.
You can register online by going togordonhospital.com and clicking on the “Education and Events” section in the middle of the page, and then click “Foundation Golf Classic.” In addition, brochures are available by contacting Jackson at (706) 879-4744 or judy.jackson@ahss.org.
