Noon Arts and Snow Queen this week at the Guild

November is a wonderfully busy time at the Creative Arts Guild. Just in time for Thanksgiving, but not too close to the end of the year festivities, are The Holiday Guild Instructors Noon Arts Holiday Buffet music performance followed by the dazzling ballet The Snow Queen.



NOON ARTS - A MUSICAL HOLIDAY BUFFET

Guild music instructors Beth Blackburn and Jim Burdick will be the featured performers at this Thursday’s Noon Arts program.

Beth began singing in church at the young age of 4. She studied flute and piano at Georgia Southern College and received her Bachelor’s Degree in Flute Performance at Georgia Southern College in 1980. She has played flute and piccolo in the Augusta Symphony Orchestra and other community orchestras and theater groups. About 12 years ago, Beth took an interest in and began playing the harp. She plays both pedal and celtic or lever harp as well as flute in various ensembles in Dalton, Rome and Chattanooga. She enjoys playing for weddings, parties and also at her church – St. Mark’s Episcopal Church. She has been an instructor at the Guild since 2003.

Jim Burdick began studying music early – piano at age 6, violin at 10 and guitar at 12. He attended a music school during middle and high school years, but did not go on to conservatory. Instead he earned a B.S. in Mathematics at Carnegie Mellon University. Following graduation in 1968, he served as an officer in the Army for seven years, with tours in Vietnam and Germany. Subsequently he worked in civilian business until 2000 and retired at age 55. He has since launched a third career in music. He is concertmaster of the L’Abri Symphony Orchestra and is a member of the Ceilidh Celtic Ensemble, which has frequently performed at the Creative Arts Guild. He is also very active in the music program at Dalton First United Methodist Church. He has been an instructor in violin and piano at the Guild since 2003.

The Noon Arts Program is entitled “Holiday Buffet” and will include pieces such as “We Three Kings,” “O Holy Night," and “Greensleeves,” as well as classical and traditional selections. The program is scheduled for this Thursday, Nov. 19, in the Creative Arts Guild Main Gallery. The free program begins at noon and will conclude by 1 p.m. Those attending may bring a lunch or order one from the Guild for $8 by calling (706) 278-0168 a day before the event. BALLET DALTON - THE SNOW QUEEN OPENS



Thursday, Nov. 19, kicks off four days of dance magic as Ballet Dalton presents its fourth annual Snow Queen production. The Dalton High Theatre will come alive with this stunning adaption of Hans Christian Andersen’s beloved fairy tale.

The Guild’s dance director Jessie Bonanno says, “Each year, as our dancers rehearse their roles, I am amazed at not only their innate talent but their commitment to the art of dance; and in particular this performance. It is the highlight of their year and we hope the community will come out and support them.”

In addition to the Ballet Dalton casts there is a surprise guest performance by beloved educator and actress Gertrude “Tut” McFarland at Sunday’s matinee. Tut will play Mrs. Claus and will read an abbreviated version of the Snow Queen to the children. Executive director Terry Tomasello says, “We are so honored to have Tut in our production. She brings with her an aura of magic and lends an air of dramatic authenticity from the moment you see her on stage. We hope we can persuade her to do additional performances next year!”

Snow Queen performances are scheduled for Nov. 19-21 at 7 p.m. and a matinee performance on Dec. 17 at 2 p.m. General admission tickets for all performances are still available and are on sale at the Creative Arts Guild, 520 West Waugh Street in Dalton.
