Creative Arts Guild Noon Arts Series resumes

The Creative Arts Guild Noon Arts winter series will resume this week offering area residents monthly brown bag lunch performances free of charge. October’s noon arts performers will be Jon Usher on euphonium accompanied by piantist Patti Cannon.

Jon is a native of and currently lives in Dalton with his wife Ximena and daughter Ariana. Usher earned degrees in music education and aviation technology from West Georgia College and San Juan College respectively. He is currently a pilot on the MD-11 for FedEx Express based in Memphis.

Usher’s instrument, the euphonium, has historically been and largely still is exclusively a band instrument, whether of the wind or brass variety, where it is frequently featured as a solo instrument. Because of this, the euphonium has been called the “king of band instruments,” or the “cello” of the band, because of its similarity in timbre and ensemble role to the stringed instrument. Euphoniums typically have extremely important parts in many marches such as those by John Phillip Sousa, and in brass band music of the British tradition. It derives its name from the Greek word euphonos, meaning “well-sounding” or “sweet-voiced.”

Also performing will be pianist Patti Cannon, a native of Albany. She and her husband, Phillip, have been residents of Dalton since 1986. They have three children: Caroline, 18; Rebekah, 16; and Chandler, 15. She received a bachelor of church music degree with a major in piano from Shorter College. For the past 21 years she has served as pianist at First Baptist in Dalton. She is currently serving as interim minister of music at First Baptist.

The program is scheduled to include “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God,” arranged by Brant Adams, “Be Thou My Vision,” arranged by James Curnow, “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring,” arranged by Stephen Bulla, as well as a couple of piano solos by Cannon.

The Noon Arts program is Thursday beginning at noon, and concluding by 1 p.m. It is free oand will be in the Creative Arts Guild Main Gallery. Those attending may bring a lunch or purchase one from the Guild by calling 706-278-0168 a day prior to the event.
