Classes at DSC
If you’re searching for calm in the eye of the storm that is your daily life, your search could be over. Dalton State College continuing education is offering several upcoming classes to nourish your creative soul and soothe your stressed body.
Local artist Judy Sorrow will be teaching Drawing Fundamentals and Figure Drawing. “These classes are for people who want to express themselves through drawing, which is a wonderful art form in which anyone at any level can participate,” Sorrow said. “These are not classes for professional-artists-in-training only. Drawing is a wonderful way to unwind and provides an excellent creative outlet. Leonardo da Vinci said that anyone can learn to draw, and I agree. It’s not about having a special talent but rather a desire to learn. I’ll teach several basic principles, including sketching and composition, and we’ll build on that foundation,” she said.
“My drawing classes are low-pressure and low-key, and we have a great time,” Sorrow continued. “People are always amazed at the artistic ability they possess that they never knew they had. Who says we have to put down our crayons and pencils when we grow up? The bottom line is this: drawing is fun, and I love teaching it.”
David Nazar, a 39-year veteran in the practice of yoga and certified yoga instructor, will be teaching the popular “Tri-Yoga” class.
“Everyone loves yoga,” Nazar said. “It’s a centering activity and helps increase energy and flexibility. Yoga is a very effective stress-reducer and can be adapted for people with different ability levels.”
Nazar will also be teaching Introduction to T’ai Chi. Nazar, a 27-year practitioner of t’ai chi, said that it is a marvelous exercise for those who desire low-impact, or even no-impact, movement.
“T’ai chi combines elements of exercise and meditation and focuses on gentle movements coupled with slow, deep breathing,” Nazar said. “No special equipment is needed and people can do t’ai chi well into their later lives. It is powerfully relaxing and calming.”
All four of these classes begin on Sept. 15 or 16 and will be in the James E. Brown Center located on the Dalton State College campus. For more information or to register, those interested should call 706-272-4454 or go online to www.daltonstate.edu/cce and click on personal growth.
