Kristy Slocumb named Guild’s creative learning director

DALTON — Continuing to grow its scope of offerings for the community, the Creative Arts Guild announces  a new division, Creative Learning and its director, Kristy Slocumb. Creative Learning will be at 111 N. Glenwood Ave., Suite 3, in Dalton.

Kristy Slocumb and Gena Kinammon, both therapists with the national organization of Discovery Learning, came to Guild Director Terry Tomasello with an “out of the box” idea in February of 2010. The national organization was closing its doors and they wanted to continue the good work they had started and needed a new home. It was a natural fit and Creative Learning was born.

The Creative Learning division works with students with average to above average ability; however, these students have difficulty in one or more subjects in the classroom and many must spend an inordinate amount of time on homework to succeed.

Additionally, therapists assist home school students and parents in all of the language arts and math skills needed at the child’s grade and ability levels. As a division of the Guild the Creative Learning team will be integrating the arts into these students’ curriculums.

“We are thrilled to have a new division that provides the arts for many students who may not have that opportunity,” Tomasello said. “Our vision has included whole child development and the creative learning department makes that vision a reality.”

The Creative Learning classrooms at The Studios at 111 are open for business.

“We already have a number of students signed up and are looking forward to an incredible year,” Slocumb said. “Our classroom and studio space reflects our needs perfectly and we are so grateful to the community and the Guild for their support.”

Slocumb has extensive experience and National Institute for Learning Development (NILD) training in her field. She is a graduate of Lee University in Cleveland, Tenn., with a bachelor of arts in elementary education. She and her family relocated to Dalton from Tyler, Texas, where she taught first and second grades.

Since moving to Dalton she has taught at Christian Heritage School and as a private therapist with Discovery Learning.

She and her husband Robby are also serving as the chairpersons for the Guild’s 47th Festival.

“Our community is so fortunate to have this young energetic couple and their son Peyton in our midst. They have embraced our community at so many levels and I know they will leave a positive and long-lasting mark,” Tomasello said.
