Bandy Heritage Center presents Civil War lecture on Thursday

DALTON — The Bandy Heritage Center for Northwest Georgia will present a lecture entitled “Secessionists, Cooperationists and Unionists: North Georgians debate the creation of a Southern Republic,” on Thursday in Goodroe Auditorium of Memorial Hall at Dalton State College, beginning at 7:30 p.m.

As part of the center’s Civil War Lecture Series, Keith Bohannon, associate professor of history for the University of West Georgia, will deliver the lecture, which is free and open to the public.

“We are delighted to have such a scholar as Keith Bohannon with us and look forward to hearing what he has to say about the debate on the creation of a Southern Republic,” said John Fowler, who serves as the director of the Bandy Heritage Center and as the Bandy Chair in History at Dalton State.

Bohannon, who earned a Ph.D. from Pennsylvania State University in 2001, has expertise in the areas of the U.S. Civil War and Reconstruction, Southern U.S. history and Georgia history. His dissertation focused on the Northeast Georgia mountains during the late antebellum and Civil War years.

Bohannon is the co-editor of a volume called “A Georgian with ‘Old Stonewall’ in Virginia: The Letters of Ujanirtus Allen, Company F, 21st Regiment, Georgia Volunteer Infantry,” which was published by the LSU Press in 1998. He is also the author of numerous other published essays.

A reception will take place following the lecture. For more information, please call (706) 272-4452.
