Deadline for Kirkman piano scholarship approaches

March 11 is the deadline for submitting applications for the 2009-2010 Karen Lightbody Kirkman Piano Scholarship offered by the Dalton Education Foundation. This scholarship provides up to $500 per year to help pay for a Dalton Public Schools student’s piano lessons.

Family and friends established the scholarship in memory of Karen Kirkman, a 1962 Dalton High School graduate. Kirkman played piano at school, church and civic performances in Dalton for many years. She helped design the scholarship with the hope that it would encourage others to share the gift of their piano talents with their community.

The scholarship is not a college scholarship. It is for students to use for piano lessons during their public school years. Any Dalton Public Schools student who has completed two years of piano study and wishes to apply may do so by completing an application form and submitting recommendations and an audition tape or CD of two musical selections.

Applications are available from all Dalton Public Schools music teachers and from the Dalton Education Foundation. Persons wishing to obtain an application package may do so by contacting the Dalton Education Foundation at (706) 278-5427.
