Hometown artist comes ‘Home for the Holidays’

DALTON — Taking the words to the popular Christmas song, “Home for the Holidays” to heart, Atlanta artist Del Martin returns to her Dalton hometown for the First Friday Fine Arts Reception at Michael’s Fine Arts and Framing, 1325 Dug Gap Road, on Friday from 6-8 p.m.

Event organizers urge area residents to come enjoy the festivities and experience the warmth of the holiday season through the artist’s work, whose paintings capture the beauty of the familiar — such as the historic Wink Theater in Dalton and the north Georgia mountains — as well as the exotic scenery of Barbados, Mexico, Italy and Tanzania. Most recently, Martin was inspired by her June travels to the picturesque village of Noyers-sur-Cher in France, where she visited her childhood friend Lynn Kenemer Couty, also a Dalton native.

“I hope longtime friends will come by, and I’ll get to meet many new friends at Michael’s First Friday Fine Arts Reception,” Martin said. “It’s a wonderful opportunity to kick off the fun of the holidays, and find a perfect, unexpected gift for a loved one. Through my work, I strive to express the love and deep appreciation I have for life’s journeys and joys. Art is a gift you can share and treasure forever.”

A lifelong artist, Del Martin was born and raised in Dalton. As a girl, her work was exhibited at the inaugural Powers Crossroads Country Fair and Art Festival in Newnan and at the annual Creative Arts Guild Firehouse Festival, where her barn wood paintings and custom-decorated river rocks were a hit with the crowd. Her paintings and original works have been exhibited in numerous art festivals and gallery shows, including the Chastain Art Gallery in Atlanta and at the University of Georgia in Athens.

Martin earned her bachelor of fine arts degree at UGA’s Lamar Dodd School of Art, where she graduated with honors. Her concentration was graphic design, with a minor in drawing and painting. She continues her art studies today, participating in an annual painting workshop in Cortona, Italy, as well as the annual Ringling School of Arts WildAcres workshop in the North Carolina mountains.

Martin’s artwork ranges from watercolors to sketches to pastels, but all of her paintings demonstrate an empathetic understanding of her subjects and highlight her love of color and light. Her paintings, “Santa Gourds,” and other original works reside in a number of private collections.
