DALTON —
Many of your favorite fairy tale characters come to musical life in Artistic Civic Theatre’s production of the “Into the Woods,” which continues this weekend at the ACT Playhouse in Dalton.
With songs and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by James Lapine, “Into the Woods” humorously combines a number of classic fairy tales into one over-arching narrative.
A baker (Brad Cline) and his wife (Jennifer Phinney) are assigned a number of tasks by a nearby witch (Lori Etheridge), and only after completing these duties are they able to have a child. During their quest to fulfill the witch’s demands, they encounter Little Red Riding Hood (Grace Kling), Rapunzel (Emeline Phinney), Cinderella (Ginny Bledsoe), Jack (Josh Parrott), and numerous other fairy tale figures.
At the end of act one, everybody’s problems have seemingly been solved in a typical “fairy tale ending,” while in the second act, the characters find themselves dealing with the consequences of their earlier actions and little remains happily ever after.
The score, winner of Broadway’s Tony Award, includes such songs as “Children Will Listen,” “Giants in the Sky” and “No One Is Alone.”
Also featured in the cast are Wes Phinney, Keith Rollins, Richard Bryan, Jan Corbin, Gracie Bramlett, Nikki Robinson, Mary Mae Sims, Tanner Blackton, Hope Mosley, Sam Martin, John Hutcheson, Andrea Etheridge and Heather Holloway.
Sponsored by Shaw Industries, “Into the Woods” is directed by Tim Etheridge, with musical direction by Peter Infanger. Performances continue tonight and Saturday at 8 p.m., Sunday at 2 p.m., and March 25-27 at 8 p.m. For ticket information, call the ACT Playhouse at 706-278-4796.
