Art programs growing at the Guild

DALTON — Art and pottery for children and teens

The Creative Arts Guild has added new art programming to its schedule of ongoing and session classes. These classes include multi-media, painting, drawing, cartooning and pottery for children, teens and adults. Additionally, the Guild will be offering art for special needs children.

The popular Discovering Art class offers age-appropriate exploration of the arts through pottery, painting, drawing and mixed-media exercises. Children and teens have the opportunity to try their hand at many different mediums.

These classes begin in March and are ongoing through the school year. Instructors are Bradley Wilson and Carmen Yeargin, both seasoned artists, degreed and with strong backgrounds in painting and pottery.

Monday classes are from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. for 9- to 12-year-olds and from 4:30 to 5:45 p.m. for 13- to 18-year-olds. Tuesday class is from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. for 5- to 8-year-olds. Thursday classes are from 4 to 5 p.m. for 9- to 12-year-olds and from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. for 5- to 8-year-olds. Students may be beginners or advanced.

The monthly fee is $45 for Guild members and $55 for non-members.

Wednesday night offers a 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. session with instructor Brad Wilson for students aged 8 to 13 who are interested in cartooning and drawing. Students will develop a personal style of cartoon drawing through the creation of characters and other forms of humorous illustration. Emphasis is placed on originality and line drawing with various media. The monthly fee is $45 for Guild members and $55 for non-members.

Ceramics, Pottery and Handbuilding will be on Tuesdays from 5 to 6 p.m. for students age 8 to 15 taught by Carmen Yeargin. This class is designed for students who have an interest in working with clay, and gives students experiences in making functional as well as sculptural pieces, using a variety of techniques. Well thought-out forms, designs and functional uses along with good craftsmanship are emphasized. The monthly fee is $45 for Guild members and $55 for non-members.



Art for special needs children

Art for Special Needs Children includes a multi-media approach to learning. Instructor Bradley Wilson will work with children as they explore the arts through painting, drawing and pottery projects. Parents or caregiver must attend with their child.

Classes will be held on Saturdays, March 13, April 10 and May 8 from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. for children ages 3 to 10. The class fee is $20 per Saturday and includes all fees.



Eight-week sessions for adults and teens

Painting for beginners and intermediate levels will begin on March 17 and be each Wednesday through May 5 from 9:45 to 11:45 a.m. This session will cover materials, painting approaches, and color mixing and theory and provide inspiration for individual expression. Beginning students learn the basics of painting from technique to composition through assignments. Intermediate are encouraged to develop their own style and theme in a supportive studio atmosphere.

This session is taught by instructor Bradley Wilson with a $160 fee for members and a $175 fee for non-members.

Life Drawing begins March 16 on Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to noon through May 4. The session is an introduction to creating drawings based on in-class observations of a range of clothed artist’s models.

Ceramics: Pottery and Handbuilding

This eight-week session of Ceramics: Pottery and Handbuilding, for ages 16 to adult, will be on Thursdays from 6:45 to 8:45 p.m. beginning on March 18 and ending on May 6. Ideas and basic techniques exploring clay as an art material: pinch, coil, slab, modular construction, with a focus on nonfunctional art will be taught.

This session is taught by instructor Carmen Yeargin with a $160 fee for members and a $175 fee for non-members plus a $35 supply and firing fee.



Private art lessons and workshops for teens and adults

Private art lessons are available for students of all ages.  WIth private lessons, the student can concentrate on any medium of his/her choice.  The student will meet one-on-one with the art instructor weekly.  Fees will vary according to medium.

Painting Animals in Watermedia Workshop for the beginning through advanced student will be held on Saturday, March 27, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. with a one-hour lunch break.

This class emphasizes animal drawing by using perceptual and technical skills. Emphasis is based on four ideas: Gesture — action and attitude of the pose; Form — volumes and geometric shapes; Anatomy — what is it made out of; and Techniques — exploration with various mediums and different ways of handling the materials.

This workshop is taught by instructor Bradley Wilson with a $90 fee for members and a $100 fee for non-members.

Clay: Handbuilt Home-Accents Workshop for the beginner through advanced student will be on two consecutive Saturdays, March 13 and 20 from 1 to 5 p.m. The principles of hand-built functional pottery with unusual approaches to surface treatment will be emphasized. Students will leave with a finished piece for their home.This session is taught by instructor Carmen Yeargin with a $130 fee for members and a $140 fee for non-members plus a $35 supply and firing fee.
