John Meadows says he’s glad voters in state House of Representatives District 5 decided to send him to Atlanta again to represent them in the General Assembly.
“I’m pleased as I can be. I really appreciate the support my community has shown me. I hope that I am worthy of it. I do appreciate the huge turnout for me,” Meadows said Tuesday night.
Meadows, a Republican, has represented the district for the past eight years. He defeated Democrat Howard Johnson on Tuesday with 11,285 votes (77.71 percent) to 3,237 votes (22.29 percent) for Johnson, according to the Secretary of State’s website. District 5 includes the western part of Gordon County and part of southwest Murray County. Meadows carried Murray County with 937 votes (74.6 percent) to 319 votes (25.4 percent).
Johnson said Monday night he believed Meadows had run a strong campaign.
“The people have spoken. I want to thank the people who voted for me, and I wish Mr. Meadows well. I’m sure he’ll do a good job,” Johnson said.
Meadows currently serves as chairman of the House Rules Committee, one of the most powerful posts in the General Assembly since that committee decides which bills get to the House floor for a vote.
“We’ll start looking at some of the bills that are pre-filed in December and try to figure out what course we are going to take,” he said. “The biggest thing we will have to deal with is the budget. We’ll be getting more and more information over the next few weeks on the money or lack of money that we’ll have next year.”
Meadows previously served 16 years on the Calhoun City Council, including 13 years as mayor. He is an insurance agent with Starr-Matthews Agency in Calhoun.
