GOP rivals debate their votes for Democrats

SAVANNAH — Two Georgia Republicans competing for a shot at reclaiming a seat in Congress for the GOP both have to explain why they voted for Democrats in past elections.

Real estate attorney Wright McLeod and construction company owner Rick W. Allen, both of Augusta, are among four candidates running in the July 31 Republican primary for east Georgia’s 12th District, a seat held by Democratic Rep. John Barrow.

For weeks, Allen has questioned McLeod’s loyalty to the GOP. Voting records show McLeod since 2002 cast ballots in five Democratic primary elections — including the 2008 presidential primary featuring Sens. Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton.

McLeod says he made a mistake, but he also calls Allen a hypocrite. Records show Allen voted in Georgia Democratic primaries in 1998 and 2004.
