State Sen. George Hooks won’t seek another term

ATLANTA — State Sen. George Hooks will not seek a 17th term in the Georgia legislature.

The Americus Democrat, known as the “Dean of the Senate,” said in a statement that he believes the time has come to step aside “and perhaps explore other areas of public service.” He said he plans to continue serving until his term ends in January 2013.

In his 32-year career, Hooks has served as an Administration Floor Leader for the Governor, and chaired the Rules and Senate Appropriations committees.

Hooks also was the chief designer of Georgia’s current state flag, and passed it into law by a single vote in both the Senate and the House of Representatives.

His current senate district, the largest in the state, includes 12 rural west Georgia counties.
