Kendrick, Miller in runoff for Whitfield court clerk

Precinct by precinct results

Incumbent Melica Kendrick and business manager Susan Miller are in a runoff for Whitfield County clerk of Superior Court.

Unofficial results with all precincts reporting show Kendrick garnered 48.87 percent of the vote, or 4,640 ballots, in the Republican primary, while Miller received 20.68 percent, or 1,964 votes. Also vying for the job were escrow closer Jessica Swinford and school teacher Jodi Stuckey. Swinford received 16.04 percent, or 1,523 votes, while 1,368 people, or 14.41 percent, cast votes for Stuckey.

Since no candidate received at least 50 percent of the vote plus one, Kendrick and Miller will face each other again in an Aug. 21 runoff. The winner of that race will take office in January unless an independent qualifies to run. No Democrats were on the ballot.

“I’m proud of the votes that I did get,” Kendrick said, adding she thanks everyone who has helped and supported her. “48.87 is not a bad number to have out of four people running, so I’ll take it.”

Kendrick filled the unexpired term of the previous court clerk, then was re-elected to another term. If she is elected again, she’ll begin her seventh year in office in January.

The contest was heated with Miller alleging that the budget under Kendrick has significantly increased under her tenure, a charge she denies. Officials in the accounting department for Whitfield County said the budget did increase but only because of a change in the budgeting process and not because the office is spending more. Yet Miller said Kendrick does have control over some of the increase.

Miller has run on a platform that touts her plans for more efficiency and responsible spending, and she thanked her supporters for their turnout.

“It’s going to take all of us working together to give Whitfield County a clerk’s office that taxpayers deserve,” she said. “I hope definitely they (voters) will hold all their elected officials accountable, and they will put a fire under them.”
