Hooper eyes chief magistrate post

Dwayne Hooper says he will run for chief magistrate in Murray County this year.

Hooper has served for the past 22 years as a part-time judge in Magistrate Court. He says he will not seek re-election for that position.

“I’d like to thank the citizens of Murray County for allowing me to serve them in that position, and I look forward to their support in this upcoming election,” he said.

Bryant Cochran is the current chief magistrate.

Magistrate Court handles civil claims of $15,000 or less, some misdemeanor criminal offenses, county ordinance violations and some deposit account fraud cases. It also handles preliminary hearings and summonses, and judges can issue arrest and search warrants.

Qualifying begins May 23. Magistrate posts are nonpartisan and will be decided during the July 31 general primary.
