Greg Jones, a member of the Whitfield County Board of Commissioners for the past five years, plans to run for re-election.
Local businesswoman Lynn Laughter also plans to seek the District 4 seat. Both Jones and Laughter are running as Republicans. Qualifying begins May 23. The general primary is July 31.
Jones said he wants to continue several initiatives the board has undertaken, including economic development.
“I feel like I’m making a difference,” Jones said. “I’ve still got some things to do. I’d like to continue with our economic development plan. I’ve been involved with, along with the rest of the board, helping bring in Engineered Floors, IVC and XL Brands. If the commissioners hadn’t got involved, we wouldn’t have gotten those three. If you look at the big picture, we’ve gotta have jobs.”
Jones was elected in a special election in June 2007 to fill the unexpired term of the late Pete Pangle.
Jones is a lifelong resident of Whitfield County. He graduated from Northwest Whitfield High School in 1982 and studied auto body mechanics at Dalton Junior College in 1982 and 1983. He owns and operates Jones North Georgia Poultry Farm in the Westside community of Whitfield County.
He and his wife Sonya have two children, Brandy and Harley. Their family attends Salem United Methodist Church in Rocky Face.
