Mike Babb, chairman of the Whitfield County Board of Commissioners, plans to run for re-election.
Qualifying begins May 23. Babb will run as a Republican in the July 31 general primary.
Babb served as board chairman from 1996 to 2004. He decided not to run for re-election then, but was again elected to the board in 2008. Commissioners by state law are limited to three consecutive terms of four years.
Babb said he believes his 12 years of experience on the board will help the county steer through it current budget crunch.
“Times are hard and I don’t need to walk off and leave a situation just because times are hard,” Babb said. “We’re going to be doing a lot of thing between now and the end of the year that will have consequences for the next four years so I ought to hang around and work out those consequences, I guess you could say.”
Babb is a graduate of F.T. Wills High School in Smyrna and Georgia State University. He has lived in Whitfield County for 40 years and served for 17 years as a volunteer fireman with the county. He is the chairman of the 15-county Northwest Georgia Regional Commission.
He is now retired after working more than 37 years in the carpet and carpet fiber industry. Babb and his wife, Karen, have been married for 38 years. They have three grown children and six grandchildren.
