School systems’ enrollment up

Enrollment in both the Dalton Public Schools and Whitfield County Schools systems is up slightly from this time last year.

According to early enrollment figures, there are 30 more Whitfield students this year and about 130 more Dalton students.

“(On Tuesday) we had 6,986 students, which was 10 more than the previous day,” Dalton Assistant Superintendent Don Amonett said. “It was also 136 more than the last day of the 2009-2010 school year, and 127 more than the same eighth day of the year in 2009-2010.”

In Whitfield County Schools, enrollment rose from 13,401 on the 10th day of school last year to 13,431 this year, school system spokesman Eric Beavers said.

Officials have speculated enrollment growth isn’t as great as expected because many people are leaving Whitfield County in search of employment given the jobs situation, including an unemployment rate of more than 11 percent.

Until about a year ago, the school system was gaining students quickly. Some 1,444 students moved into the Whitfield school system between 2002 and 2008.
