• Herbie Smith of Rocky Face earned Highest Honors for the spring 2012 semester at the University of New Hampshire. Highest Honors are awarded to students who earn a semester grade point average of 3.7 or better out of a possible 4.0.
• Georgia Southern University recently named several local students to the spring 2012 president’s list for achieving a 4.0 grade point average while carrying at least 12 hours during the semester. They include Kayla McFalls, a graphic design major from Chatsworth; Emery Brown of Dalton, studying management/entrepreneurship; William Chappell, a recreation major from Dalton; Jordan Cook, a pre-education early childhood education major from Tunnel Hill; Garren Palmer, a sports management major from Rocky Face; and Tanner Parker, a construction management major from Dalton.

They include Zack Amos of Rocky Face, who is studying mechanical engineering; Brian Anderson Jr., a pre-business major from Dalton; Kenneth Brown, a pre-business major from Rocky Face; Jesus Gonzalez, a pre-engineering/aerospace engineering major from Dalton; Courtney Griffin, a nursing major from Chatsworth; Morgan Griffin, an art major from Chatsworth; Lindsay Joyce, a management major from Dalton; Kyle Keener, a middle grades education major from Dalton; Katlyn Nichols, an exercise major from Chatsworth; Bradley Townsend, a fashion merchandise and apparel major from Dalton; and Donald Weaver, a music education/instrumental major from Rocky Face.
• Charles Donald Thomason, son of Martha and Larry Thomason of Dalton, has accepted membership into The National Society of Collegiate Scholars. The Georgia Institute of Technology student had to be in the top 10 percent of his class and have a grade point average of at least 3.4 Membership in NSCS provides opportunities for career and networking resources, scholarships and travel and service projects, according to the organization.
• Carlton Heath Petty, son of Jerry and Phenna Petty of Crandall, graduated from Mercer School of Medicine in Savannah this spring. He is a 2003 valedictorian of Murray County High School and a 2008 honor graduate of the University of Georgia. Petty will specialize in radiology and will begin his residency in June. He will be in Spokane, Wash., for his transitional year and then four years in Richmond, Va., at Virginia Commonwealth University Hospital.
• Michael McCarthy of Rocky Face was named to the spring 2012 dean’s list at Wake Forest University.
• Farid Mansoor Khan, son of Dr. Mohammad B. Khan and Tahereh Bolbolian of Dalton, graduated from Washington University in St. Louis this May summa cum laude, with a major in chemistry and biochemistry. The 2008 McCallie School graduate received the David Lipkin Award in Chemistry awarded each year to a chemistry major for outstanding achievement in Physical Chemistry, as well as the Certificate for Outstanding Performance for an Academic Mentor (for MCAT and organic chemistry tutoring). He is in the process of applying to medical school.
• Several local residents graduated this spring from Georgia Northwestern Technical College.
