ROME —
The Berry College Moon Gallery will be hosting “The 2.8 Project,” a photography exhibit by Paul O’Mara, now through Sept. 17. Hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday or by appointment. An artist’s reception is scheduled for 7 p.m. Monday, Aug. 30. Admission to the reception and exhibit is free and open to the public. Call 706-290-2692 or 706-236-2289 for more information.
“The 2.8 Project” features subjects that O’Mara has found to be of particular personal interest during his long and varied career. Examples include the Coosa River drainage, Armuchee Bluegrass Festival, Berry College Longleaf Pine Project and more.
“It’s a bit of self-renewal to revisit the basics of photography,” O’Mara stated of his black-and-white exhibit. “As a professional photographer more accustomed to illustrating client directed subject matter, ‘The 2.8 Project’ is an opportunity to get involved with my interests in a very personal way.”
O’Mara started his career as a photographer’s mate for the U.S. Navy in 1977. Later, he was selected to attend the Military Photojournalism Program at Syracuse University and became a Navy photojournalist. From 1981-84, he was assigned to photograph the U.S. Navy Flight Demonstration Squadron, the Blue Angels, during which time he photographed many luminaries including President Ronald Reagan, Bob Hope, Christie Brinkley, Olivia Newton- John and John Travolta, among others. After leaving the Navy, he continued his career as chief photograph for the Rome News-Tribune.
Today, O’Mara operates his own photography business in Rome. His award-winning images have been used by schools, colleges and universities, as well as industry, corporate and editorial clients. He is also the current president of the Atlanta/SE Chapter of the American Society of Media Photographers.
