Rotary honors students

The Rotary Club recognized several area fifth-graders for putting service to others above themselves on Tuesday. School officials chose one student from their school to be recognized. Nine schools from Dalton Public Schools and Whitfield County Schools were represented Tuesday. Students from the remaining elementary schools will be recognized at a meeting in March.



Allison “Alli” Swinford

Alli is 10 and attends Varnell Elementary. Her parents are Bobby and Jessica Swinford, and she has one brother, who is 15. Her favorite subjects are language arts and reading. She likes to sing, play softball and basketball. When she grows up she wants to sing professionally. Alli feels that it is important to serve others because God tells us to help others, and it makes her happy.



Emory Painter

Emory is 10 and attends Dug Gap Elementary. Her parents are Fawn Montalongo and Jacob Painter. She also has a sister who is 17 and three brothers who are 18, 3 and 1. Her favorite subjects are reading and language. She enjoys painting, drawing and cheerleading. She wants to be an artist when she grows up. She feels that it is important to serve others because maybe something good will come back around to you.



Kyle Muse

Kyle is 11 and attends Valley Point Elementary. His parents are Mark and Karen Muse. He has one brother who is 11 and one sister who is 7. His favorite subjects are science and social studies. He enjoys hunting, fishing and football. Kyle wants to be a train engineer when he grows up, and he likes to serve others because you can teach people things they don’t know.



Elizabeth Rodriguez

Elizabeth is 10 and is a student at Pleasant Grove Elementary. Her parents are Jose Rodriguez and Irene Rodriguez. She has a sister who is 7 and three brothers who are 4 and 2. Her favorite subject is math. She also enjoys art and loves to play soccer. She hasn’t decided what she wants to be when she grows up but is strongly considering becoming a nurse, a teacher or an artist. She feels that it is important to serve others because people need help, especially those who are sick.



Scottie Sandlin

Scottie is 10 and attends Westwood Elementary. Her parents are Scott and Cara Sandlin. She has one brother that is 17 years old. Her favorite subjects are social studies, math and writing. She enjoys ballet, Girl Scouts, church, basketball, playing outside and family time. When she grows up she wants to be a nurse. She says it is important to serve others because “serving others not only helps the other person, but it helps me feel good. It shows that you support that person and their project.”



Antonio Maston

Antonio is a fifth-grader at Dawnville Elementary. His grandparents are Effie and Roy Smith. He has two sisters. One is 11 and one is 9. His favorite subject is science, and he enjoys playing football. When he grows up he wants to be a football player. Serving others makes Antonio happy; he enjoys seeing others benefit from his service.



Odaliz Beltran

Odaliz is 10 and attends Roan Elementary. Her parents are Jesus and Liliana Beltran. Her sister Leslie is 12. Her favorite subject is science. She enjoys kickball, shopping and knitting club. When she grows up, she wants to be a teacher. Odaliz says it is important to serve others “because they might learn to serve and help others too.”



Kade West

Kade is 10 and attends Westside Elementary. His parents are Chris and Angie West. He has one brother, Kason. His favorite subject is math, and he enjoys karate, four-wheeling and boating. When he grows up, he wants to be an architect. Kade says that “it is important to help others because it is just the right thing to do, and if I ever need help, I would want someone to be there for me.”



Vanessa Rodriguez

Vanessa is 10 and attends Eastside Elementary. Her parents are Pablo and Susie Rodriguez. She has two brothers, Pablo, who is 13, and Stephano, who is 12. Her favorite subject is writing, and she enjoys playing basketball. When she grows up, she either wants to be a WNBA basketball player or a doctor. Vanessa says it is important to serve others because they may be going through a situation different than your own, and it is better to serve others than yourself.
