Bandy Heritage Center will present Annual Civil War Lecture Series
The Bandy Heritage Center for Northwest Georgia will present the first of its Annual Civil War Lecture Series events on Thursday. The evening’s talk will focus on the secession in northwest Georgia.
The lecture, to be delivered by assistant professor of history Keith Hebert of the University of West Georgia, will take place at 7 p.m. in the James E. Brown Center on the Dalton State College campus. The event is free and open to the public.
“Most scholars know the importance of this region to the outcome of the Civil War, but most people are not as aware of it,” said John Fowler, director of the Bandy Heritage Center.
“The Atlanta Campaign decided the Civil War,” Fowler continued. “Almost everyone has heard about the Battle of Gettysburg, but that battle was not as important to the outcome of the war as were the battles that were taking place in our area.”
Historians Keith Bohannon of the University of West Georgia and Stephen Berry of the University of Georgia will join Fowler in continuing the lecture series on Secession in Georgia during the spring semester. Times and dates will be announced. The series will also offer programs related to a particular theme in Georgia history each year.
After each lecture, a reception will follow along with an opportunity for guests to ask questions of the speakers.
