Heroes Against Child Abuse fundraiser has monthly winners
Mary Ellen Kinsey of Whitfield County Schools was the first winner of the Heroes Against Child Abuse monthly $100 gift certificate giveaway sponsored by the Family Support Council. Several years ago the council initiated the Heroes campaign to empower students through participation in local child abuse prevention efforts.
The kickoff event item to help promote the effort is a monthly drawing for a $100 Walmart gift certificate. Each ticket costs $1 and gives each participant a chance to win. The next winners will be announced on Nov. 30 and Dec. 17. Ticket buyers must enter each month to be eligible to win.
The Family Support Council provides many free opportunities for children and families throughout the area. Donations enable the council to provide Kids on the Block to all of the local elementary and middle schools, Camp Aim (a therapeutic summer camp for abused children from ages 6 to 14), the Parents as Teachers program (directed at high-risk preschoolers ages 2 to 5 in the Dalton, Murray and Whitfield school districts), parenting classes, summer camps, trainings and workshops that foster protective assets within families and help to prevent child abuse.
Tickets can be purchased at the Family Support Council office at 1529 Waring Road or at most local elementary schools. For more information call Ginger Robinson at (706) 272-7919, extension 227.
