Berry College to host presentation by 2010 state teacher of the year
ROME — The Berry College Charter School of Education and Human Sciences will host a presentation by 2010 Georgia Teacher of the Year Gwen Desselle at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 4, in the Science Auditorium. Admission is free and open to the public. Her appearance is being sponsored by the Charter School and Berry’s chapter of Kappa Delta Pi.
Desselle has taught for 32 years, 28 of which have been spent at Colquitt County High School, where she presently works. The veteran social studies teacher was chosen for the honor out of 147 applicants statewide. In her role as Georgia Teacher of the Year, she will spend the 2009-10 academic year traveling around the state serving as an advocate for public education and the teaching profession.
In her application for the award, Desselle noted that her philosophy of teaching focuses on the future. She also stressed the importance of adapting her teaching methods to keep pace with a changing world.
“We know that as society changes, children change and, therefore, the lessons must revise too,” she said. “Therefore, we consistently design, implement and revise lessons that best fit the needs of our students, because we realize that our purpose as educators is to prepare students for tomorrow – not yesterday.”
Desselle has a love for traveling, and her students reap the benefits. She brings back stories and experiences from her trips that she passes down to her students. One of her senior students stated, “It isn’t like she teaches history, but it is like she lives it.”

Recycling Ben, mascot for the Target Recycling program, presented the seventh-grade class at New Hope Middle School an award for having the highest recycling rate during the second quarter of the 2009-2010 school year.

Falcons roost at Southeast
At Southeast, football ruled the day during an afternoon pep rally as the school celebrated as victors in the Atlanta Falcons “Win-Win Challenge” presented by Under Armour and Hibbett Sports. Southeast received a prize package of $5,000 in Under Armour apparel and $5,000 in cash, which will be spent on new dumbbells for the weight room and upgrades to the physical education program.
