Class Acts

This summer Southeast High School had two students — Danielle Carroll and Cassie Rodgers — compete at the national level in FCCLA (Future Career and Community Leaders of America) STAR Events and receive Gold metals. Their projects were on Chapter Service Project Display.

Three more students competed at the national level in FCCLA STAR Events and received Silver medals: Natalie Flores, Christi Maddox and Mayra Perez competed in Applied Technology.

Also, several Southeast students returned from the Fall Leadership Rally in Perry recently. Danielle Carroll, Anna Valdez, Christi Maddox and Steven Valdez competed in the Culinary Knowledge Bowl. No opponent scored more than three points against them. They won first place, and Southeast received a $650 check, trophies and a plaque to hang in the school. Southeast was also recognized for having the largest membership of any chapter in the state for the 2008-2009.

The Marching Indians band from Murray County High School concluded its competitive season recently at the Georgia Invitational Band Championship at Hiram High School in Paulding County. The band earned “superior” ratings in every category. The Marching Indians also won the gold medal in class AA for drum majors and majorettes, and the silver medal in AA for percussion.

The band also placed recently at the Golden River Marching Contest in Tallapoosa. The band earned “superior” ratings in each category with the exception of an “excellent” rating for the color guard. The Marching Indians also won the silver medal in class AA for drum majors, silver medal in AA for percussion, gold medal in AA for majorettes, and the bronze medal in AA for overall band score. The percussion score also placed the Marching Indians’ percussion section in third place in the silver division (A, AA and AAA), with the drum majors and majorettes placing second in the silver division.

Megan F. Garland of Dalton was placed on the academic achievement list at Georgia SouthWestern State University for the summer semester of 2009. Students who previously earned 15 hours of credit and who are enrolled in three to 14 hours of courses and earned a 3.5 or higher grade point average are placed on the list.

n Lindsey Gail Derrick of Dalton has been accepted to the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Georgia in Athens for the spring semester. She will major in magazines.

Derrick is a 2007 graduate of Northwest Whitfield High School and the daughter of Sid and Sandra Derrick of Dalton.
