DHS band celebrates successes
For the second year in a row, the Dalton High School Marching Band took third place in a regional competition.
In 2008, it was the LaFayette Marching Classic where the band was awarded an overall bronze medal. This year, competing in the first of three October contests, the band went to the Yellow Jacket Marching Festival in Rockmart where it had competed for the past three years.
As the band has grown to nearly 100 members this season, DHS band director David Henry and Dalton Middle School music director Lewie Humphrey were required to move the band up to class 3A. The DHS band is no stranger to this larger category, and has voluntarily competed at this higher level before, and won.
There were 14 bands competing in the recent competition. Bringing home a score of 91.17, the DHS band beat back bands in class 4A and open class. Second place went to Gilmer County with a score of 91.5, and South Paulding took first place at 94.33.
The DHS band is now preparing for its second competition today in Dallas, Ga. (the Southern National Band Championships), and will wrap up this competitive season on Oct. 24 at the LaFayette Marching Classic in Fayetteville.
