Class Acts
• Emily Kisor of Dalton graduated from Brenau University in Gainesville with a bachelor of science degree in middle grades education, graduating cum laude with a grade point average between 3.5 and 3.74 and also with honors. She was named to the dean’s list for the spring 2009 semester with an average of at least 3.6.
• Clinton Mitchell Davis, son of Jim and Kathleen Davis of Dalton, was named to the merit list at Gainesville State College for the spring 2009 semester. Students must attain a 3.5 grade point average or higher with between nine and 15 semester credit hours of academic work to be named to the list. Davis is studying pre-medicine.
• Landon Hair, son of Bryan and Donna Hair of Dalton, was named to the Phi Sigma Theta National Honor Society at the University of Tennessee. Phi Sigma Theta recognizes undergraduates who have high academic achievements.
• Brittany M. Taylor of Dalton graduated with a bachelor of arts in history from Georgia College & State University.
• Benjamin Miles Watts, son of Benjamin M. Watts Sr. and Kathryn W. Watts of Tunnel Hill, received a bachelor of arts with a major in criminal justice/history at Roanoke College in Salem, Va.
• Bethany McGuire, a senior early childhood education major at the University of West Georgia, was named to the dean’s list with a 4.0 grade point average for the spring semester. She was also inducted into Rho Lambda, the national sorority leadership recognition society. Membership in Rho Lambda is available only to those who have exhibited the highest qualities of leadership and service to their Greek community and sorority. McGuire has served as treasurer and president of Phi Mu sorority. She is the daughter of Steve and Teresa McGuire of Rocky Face.
• Several area students graduated from the University of West Georgia in May. Receiving degrees from Dalton were Bradley Ernest Campbell, with a bachelor of arts in history; Amanda Erin Hackney, with a bachelor of science in criminology; Lauren Michelle Mariney, with a bachelor of arts in mass communications; Michael David Powers, with a bachelor of arts in chemistry; and Catherine M Smith Scott, with a bachelor degree in nursing. From Rocky Face were Maria Angeles Alvarez, with a bachelor of arts in psychology; Franklin Zane Dobbins, with a bachelor of arts in German; Anna-Maria Eve Hohol, with a master of education in speech pathology; Fernando Izaguirre-Rodriguez, with a bachelor degree in nursing; and Andrew Hollis Nuckolls, with a bachelor of science in political science. Sequoyah Kunique Mack of Tunnel Hill received a bachelor degree in nursing.
• Students named to the dean’s list at the University of West Georgia for the spring 2009 semester had to achieve a grade point average of 3.5 and carry at least 12 semester hours. Named to the dean’s list from Dalton were Shequitia Sharinel Davis, Megan Elizabeth Dodson, Alyssa Jana LaCole Johnson, Kim Chi Lorberbaum, Lauren Michelle Mariney, Kristen Nicole Oliver, Hannah Kirsten Ridley and Chrisley Lemara Thomas. Also on the list were Kali Rae Ratcliff of Cohutta; Melissa Meghan Hart, Bethany Nicole McGuire and Andrew Hollis Nuckolls of Rocky Face; and Rebekah Nicole Dean of Varnell.
• Adam M. Jones of Chatsworth was named to the merit list for the spring 2009 semester at Darton College. Part-time students who earn a 3.4 grade point average or higher are named to the list.
• Three Tunnel Hill residents graduated from Valdosta State University in May. They are Jennifer Ashley Carroll, with a bachelor of science in education for middle grades education; Allison Ann Crawford, with an education specialist in instructional technology; and Rebecca Elizabeth Hardinger, with a bachelor of fine arts in interior design.
Several local students were named to the dean’s list at Valdosta State University for the spring 2009 semester. To make the dean's list, students must maintain a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 and must have a semester grade point average of at least 3.5 with at least nine hours of course work. The students are Kimberly Anne Baker of Cohutta, Nakita Dziegielewski of Dalton and Rebecca Elizabeth Hardinger of Tunnel Hill.
• Dalton resident Rebecca Pacheco, a student at the Whitfield Career Academy, was awarded a Skill Point Certificate in Food and Beverage Service during the SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference recently in Kansas City, Mo. The certificate was awarded in 86 occupational and leadership areas at the conference. It was earned by achieving a score defined by industry, based on contest standards designed by industry representatives.

Brochu a finalist for S.C. superintendent job
Katie Brochu was one of 99 candidates who applied to head up Richland School District Two in Columbia, S.C. According to the school district’s Web site, there are more than 24,000 students enrolled, and the budget is more than $322 million.

Dalton band marches in Savannah parade
The DHS band marched at the 1965 inauguration of president Lyndon Johnson and in the 1987 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

Students protest state budget cuts
About 20 Dalton State College students joined the ranks of hundreds of college students around Georgia on Monday in a budget protest rally at the state Capitol.

DHS band headed to Savannah for St. Patrick’s Day Parade
The band of about 90 students will leave Dalton Tuesday around 4 p.m., then be ready to march at 10:15 a.m. on Wednesday.

Coahulla Creek High work continues
When construction on Whitfield County’s newest high school is complete, the campus will feature more prominent outdoor classrooms than any school in the district and will be designed for the project-based learning students are moving toward.

Falcons roost at Southeast
At Southeast, football ruled the day during an afternoon pep rally as the school celebrated as victors in the Atlanta Falcons “Win-Win Challenge” presented by Under Armour and Hibbett Sports. Southeast received a prize package of $5,000 in Under Armour apparel and $5,000 in cash, which will be spent on new dumbbells for the weight room and upgrades to the physical education program.

DSC students plan rally to protest budget cuts
More than 200 Dalton State College students gathered Thursday afternoon for a town hall style meeting to question college leaders regarding state funding cuts they were told could result in the elimination of entire degree programs.

Dalton State College presents lecture on effects of global climate change
The lecture, which is sponsored by the Fine Arts and Lecture Series and the Office of Student Activities, is free and open to the public.
