Whitfield County Schools offering three new pre-k classrooms

Whitfield County Schools’ Cedar Ridge, Eastside and Valley Point elementary schools have each been awarded one new pre-kindergarten classroom for the 2009-2010 school year.

Each classroom will serve 20 children. The goal of Georgia’s pre-k program is to successfully prepare children for school by providing an opportunity for them to develop school readiness skills in an environment that encourages fun while learning.

In order for children to attend these pre-k classrooms, they must live within the school’s district and be 4 years of age by Sept. 1, 2009. Cedar Ridge principal Allyson Millican, Eastside principal Ty Snyder and Valley Point principal Karey Williams will hold student registration at the Whitfield Career Academy at 2300 Maddox Chapel Road on July 20 from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.

Since demand is likely to be higher than the number of spaces available, a lottery drawing will be held following registration to choose which students get to attend. The pre-k lottery drawing will be held at 5 p.m.

For pre-k registration, parents need to bring copies of the following:

• Proof of immunizations (Form 3231)

• Eye, ear and dental certificate (Form 3300)

• Social Security card

• Birth certificate

• Proof of residence in parent’s name (i.e. rent receipt, lease agreement, settlement statement, utility bill that shows “service address,” or if family is living with another family, notarized letter and utility bill from that person)

• Medicaid/PeachCare Card

For more information, please check out the school system’s Web site at www.whitfield.k12.ga.us. Click on Departments, scroll down to Teaching and Learning, and select pre-kindergarten.
