Education notebook

Heather Ellis, daughter of Bruce and Tami Ellis of Dalton, was named to the dean’s list at Belmont University for the spring 2009 semester. Eligibility is based on a minimum course load of 12 hours and a grade point average of 3.5 with no grade below C. Ellis is majoring in computer science with a minor in mathematics. She is a member of Olivia Baptist Church.

Matthew R. Sissom recently graduated from Southern Polytechnical State University in Marietta with a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering technology. He is a 2002 graduate of Northwest Whitfield High School and is employed by B&J; Machinery as an engineering sales representative. He is the son of Patrick and Beverly Sissom from the Varnell community. He and his wife, Kasey, reside in Tunnel Hill.

Stephanie N. Harrell, daughter of Dan and Debbie Harrell of Cohutta, graduated cum laude from the University of Georgia College of Pharmacy with a doctorate of pharmacy degree. She is moving to Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Cody Alan Carlson, son of Eric and Mechelle Carlson of Rocky Face, graduated cum laude from Young Harris College in May. Carlson is a member of Phi Theta Kappa and received an associate of science degree with a concentration in allied health. He was also named to the dean’s list for spring semester 2009. Students who achieve a 3.5 grade point average or better are eligible for the dean’s list.

Several local students attending Lee University were recently named to the spring 2009 dean’s list with honors for achieving a semester grade point average of 3.9 or higher. Staci Knight, daughter of Durwood and Carol Knight of Cohutta, and Rachel Massingale, daughter of Willis and Pam Massingale of Rocky Face, were named to the list.

Taylor Goddard, daughter of Tommy and Anita Goddard of Cohutta, was named to the dean’s list at Lee University for a semester grade point average of 3.7 or higher.

• Aleena Gillani, daughter of Alnoor and Khairun Gillani of Dalton, was named to the spring 2009 honor list of Oxford College, the two-year liberal arts division of Emory University in Oxford, Ga. Students must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher to be on the list.

Several local students graduated from Emory in May. They are Dalton residents Gillani, who received an associate of arts; bachelor of science recipient Vikram Srivastava, son of Vinai Kumar and Arcana Srivastava; master of business administration recipient Shyam Bhatter rbrown 6/19/09 no parents names provided; bachelor of science recipient Salman Hemani, son of Shehla F. Kahn and Ismail S. Hemani; bachelor of arts recipient Matthew Howard, son of Chester Junior Howard; bachelor of arts recipient Anaelia Pineda, daughter of Gildardo and Ma Angeles Pineda; and Rocky Face resident Shaye Byers, daughter of Daniel Dale Byers and Lisa Peeples Capizzi. Byers received a bachelor of arts degree.

Several local students were named to the dean’s list at Berry College for the spring 2009 semester for an academic average of 3.5 or better while carrying at least 12 hours. They are Dalton residents Lindsey Bramlett, daughter of Randall E. and Kimberly Bramlett; Calli Long, daughter of Susan Long; Cleve Miller, son of Lisa Miller; Yuliana Lopez, daughter of Ana Beliz Lopez; Joanna Jinright, daughter of Michael and Kaye Jinright; Amy Pierce, daughter of Leland and Myra Pierce; Chatsworth resident Beth Weaver, daughter of Phil and Tammy Weaver; Cohutta resident April Kinsey, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mark Kinsey and Crandall resident Kalia Miller, daughter of Dona Miller Cargle.

Dalton residents Deanna Gray and Don Green made the dean’s list for the spring 2009 semester at Georgia Tech. Wesley Herndon of Chatsworth was also named to the list. Undergraduate students earning a 3.0 or higher for the semester are named to the list.

Jonathon LaVelle, son of Blair and Belinda LaVelle of Tunnel Hill, was named to the dean’s list for the spring 2009 semester at Brevard College in North Carolina. Students must be enrolled full time and earn a 3.5 grade point average or higher for the semester to be on the list.

Two local students recently graduated from Samford University in Birmingham, Ala. Lauren Lynne Elder of Chatsworth received a doctor of pharmacy degree. Dustin J. Manning of Dalton received a juris doctor (law degree).

Matthew Brigman of Dalton graduated from the College of William and Mary with a juris doctor degree. The College of William and Mary is a public university in Virginia.

Elizabeth M. Blevins of Cohutta was named to the Union University president’s list for the spring 2009 semester for a 4.0 grade point average.

Mollie Kate Parker was named the 2009 valedictorian of Murray County High School. Her parents are Paul and Denise Parker, and her brother is Andrew Parker. She plans to attend North Georgia College and State University in Dahlonega this fall. Her hobbies are playing guitar, kickboxing and camping with her family. She has been a member of the Key Club, Beta Club, student council, art club and Future Business Leaders of America. She attends CrossPointe Christian Centre.

Cuna, with a bachelor of business administration; Niles Ashley Fleet, with a bachelor of science in education; Jonathan Christopher Harton, with a bachelor of arts; Robert Talmadge Infanger, with a bachelor of landscape architecture; Patrick Lane Raber, with a bachelor of science; Adam Derik Smitherman, with a bachelor of science; Robin Corinne Steele, with a bachelor of science in education; Joseph Dempsey Turrentine, with a bachelor of arts; James Patrick Ward, with a bachelor of arts; and Seth Alan Yarbrough, with a bachelor of science.

Also graduating were Tunnel Hill residents Kristen Lynn Chesser with a bachelor of science in agriculture and Stephen Franklin Kuzniak with a master of science. Others were Rocky Face residents Richard Joshua Deslattes with a bachelor of science in education and Joseph Wayne Farmer with a bachelor of business administration.

CLINTON, MS —Mississippi College has named Jessica E. Tatum of Dalton to the Dean’s List for the 2009 spring semester, according to Dr. Ron Howard, Vice President for Academic Affairs.

To be eligible for the Dean's List, a student must maintain a 3.5 or better grade point average with a full course load.

ROME — Shorter College has announced the spring 2009 Dean's List honorees. To achieve this honor, students must complete a minimum of 12 semester hours and earn at least a 3.5 grade point average for the term.

Four Whitfield County students were among the 338 students named to the Reinhardt College Dean’s List for spring semester 2009.

These students include from Darcie Palvich; of Cohutta, Jason Bunch and Hannah Mayo of Dalton and Judith Ross of Tunnel Hill, Ga.

A Reinhardt Dean’s List student must maintain a 3.5 grade-point average based on successful completion of a minimum of 12 semester credits with no grade less than a B.
