Dalton State to host Appalachian Adventure 2009 at Amicalola Falls State Park

Dalton State College’s Center for Continuing Education and DSC Destinations will sponsor “An Appalachian Adventure: Summer Days and Summer Nights” at Amicalola Falls State Park, July 19-24.

Similar to the Elderfest programs Dalton State has sponsored in the past, this six-day event will consist of programs and leisure activities in a setting that is known for its beauty and breathtaking views.

“Amicalola Falls State Park, with its waterfalls and walking trails, is such a beautiful place to spend a few days,” says Carol Burton, DSC Destinations coordinator. “Many people who have attended Elderfests here with us before are coming back for this program, which will focus on the simple pleasures of summer and the charms of Southern Appalachia of days gone by.”

Among the programs to be presented are: “When Steam was King,” which will capture the romance of ocean liners and express trains; “The Magnolias,” a musical quartet featuring songs from the 40s and 50s; “Southern Lit,” which will examine the New South through the eyes of contemporary Southern authors; and “I Hear the Mountains Singing,” music and storytelling by Bob Thomason.

Participants will also be able to hop aboard the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway for a 26-mile round trip along the Toccoa River.

DSC Destinations will also sponsor other events this year, including a hike to the Len Foote Hike Inn on Oct. 24-25 and a trip to Ireland from Nov. 3-12.
