Brookwood third-grade teacher named Tom Jones Educator of the Year

The highest award given to a Dalton Public Schools educator by the Dalton Education Foundation went to a Brookwood School third-grade teacher Friday.

Gail Godwin was named the 2010 Tom Jones Educator of the Year. The announcement was made Friday afternoon at a faculty-staff assembly at the Wink Theatre in Dalton.

Godwin is the 24th honoree to be named the Tom Jones Educator of the Year. The award was started in 1987 to honor Thomas R. Jones who served on the Dalton Board of Education for 26 years, 22 years as chairman.

“Jones was well known for his support for public education as well as his support for Dalton,” Dalton Education Foundation Executive Director Jean Lowrey said in a press release. “He was co-founder of J&J Industries, a Chamber of Commerce board chairman, and a Rotarian. He was very active in the community and his church but devoted the majority of his volunteer time to the Dalton Public Schools.”

Like Jones, Godwin builds relationships to create and support her work, Lowrey said.

“I believe the culture and relationships experienced by young students help shape their view of the world and themselves,” Godwin said.

Godwin received $3,000 and a traditional crystal apple award. Brookwood School received $1,000. Dalton Education Foundation President Kevin Wright said the honored educator’s school receives an award as well because of the belief that the educator’s colleagues help each other become better educators.
