Boring-Tunnell internship targets students interested in construction

Submitted by Furman University

GREENVILLE, S.C. — Ken and Dottie Boring of Dalton have given Furman University $250,000 to establish an internship in honor of their daughter Laura, a Furman graduate, and their friends and former Furman Parents Council co-chairs Lynn and Lynnie Tunnell.

The Boring-Tunnell Internship will support business interns in the construction field with preference given to work at a firm that produces concrete, crushed stone or other quarry products.

A World War II veteran, Ken Boring expanded a family quarry business, Dalton Rock Products, from a single plant in Georgia to five plants in Georgia and Tennessee. He eventually became involved in banking and real estate businesses.

The Tunnells, also of Dalton, headed the Parents Council at Furman in the 1990s. Parents of two Furman alumni, they continue to sing Furman’s praises to prospective students.

The Borings’ daughter Laura was a business major at Furman and graduated in 2006. She currently is a portfolio assistant at Columbia Management on Madison Avenue in New York City and plans to pursue an MBA degree. Her parents also have contributed to Furman by working with the Parents Council and as members of the Richard Furman Society.
