Will Coahulla Creek High School students call themselves the Coyotes or the Eagles? How about the Millers, Spartans or Chargers?
Members of the community can have a say in the decision through 3 p.m. on Thursday. The school on Crow Road is scheduled to open in 2011, and Principal Phillip Brown said about 700 people voted in an online survey (www.surveymonkey.com/s/CoahullaCreekColors-Mascot) on suggested mascots and school colors during the first week the survey was up. The voting closes on Thursday, and about a dozen students selected by principals from North Whitfield Middle School, the Whitfield Career Academy, Northwest Whitfield High School and Southeast High School will meet during the first part of September to choose the mascot and colors. Most of the students are from the middle school while two are from Northwest, one from the Career Academy and one from Southeast. Some students from the existing high schools will transfer to Coahulla Creek when it opens.
Brown said he’ll ask the students to consider probably the community’s top three choices for the mascot and top three choices for the colors. He said he hopes to unveil the students’ choices at the Monday, Sept. 13, meeting of the Whitfield Board of Education.
The online survey allows participants to select from 10 color combinations listed or write in their own. They can also choose from among 10 mascots or suggest their own. Brown said the choices listed in the survey were selected to allow Coahulla Creek to stand out from other area schools.
Whitfield County Schools spokesman Eric Beavers said seeking community input is how the school system does business for decisions like this one.
“The community helped us design and name Coahulla Creek High School, and we are asking for their help again to help us select the colors and mascot for the new high school,” he said.
While the members of the Board of Education selected the name of the high school — rejecting the most suggested names of Northeast Whitfield High and Prater’s Mill High — Brown said the student group will have final say on the mascot and colors.
