The Perfect Polish

Cosmetology and Skills U.S.A. at North Murray High School recently sponsored a community service project in which Donna Blankenship’s students gave manicures to the residents of the Murray County Senior Center.

The seniors came to North Murray High School, and Blankenship’s third period class administered the manicures.

“We arrange for the seniors to come annually,” Blankenship said. “Last year we gave manicures, and they came back later in the year for shampoos, sets and styles. Next time they visit, they are hoping to receive facials. This is probably my favorite activity of the school year. It gives our students an opportunity to work on actual clients.”

Skills the students learn may be used later through time transfers if they choose to continue with their cosmetology education.

Senior Center Director Joan Dooley said, “Donna (Blankenship) called me, and we set up the meeting in December. Our residents really enjoy getting to come to the school; it’s really a nice school. We like bringing them to get pampered because they don’t get the opportunity often.”

Also in attendance with the senior group was Dolores Chapman, who happened to be Blankenship’s high school cosmetology teacher. “She inspired me to become a cosmetology teacher,” Blankenship said.

The seniors received a basic manicure, which includes nail art and hand massages.
