CHATSWORTH — CHATSWORTH — Skyler Sproles sat down with pencil and paper and began to write.
“My famous American is Jacqueline Lee Bouvier Kennedy Onassis. She was born in Southampton hospital in Southampton, New York on July 28, 1929 ...”
The Coker Elementary School third-grader went on for several more paragraphs about the life of the former first lady. Then she handed in her essay and drawing with the rest of Leona Welch’s third-grade class so that they could be compiled in a professionally published book.
“For a first book signing, I think it went well,” Missy Powers said after the students in her class and Welch’s class had gathered in the cafeteria on Tuesday to sign their books and distribute them to parents and others who pay the $18 fee. The publishing was done through Student Treasures, a company that prints the books free for classrooms and charges a fee for outside purchasers. The cost includes shipping and handling.
“I’m excited,” said Delayne Sproles, Skyler’s mother. “That’s her (drawing) on the cover, so she’s extra excited. She loves to read and draw.”
Welch said students began the project in December and finished in February. Each student researched a famous American of his or her choosing, wrote an essay, drew a picture of the subject and gave an oral presentation.
Skyler Chase, a student in Powers’ class, said she researched aviator Amelia Earhart, learning, among other things, that “her body was never found and she was friends with the president.”
She said she likes to write, but reading is her favorite subject. She plans to put her book away as a keepsake.
For more information on the book, call the school at (706) 695-0888.
