Local high schools recognized for AP classes, exams

State School Superintendent John Barge named several local high schools as Advanced Placement (AP) Honor Schools.

Some 367 Georgia schools received honors.

AP classes offer rigorous college-level work for students in high school. Students who score high enough on AP exams may receive college credit.

The 2012 AP Honor Schools are named in five categories, based on the results of 2011 AP classes and exams:

• AP Access and Support Schools: Have at least 30 percent of their AP exams taken by students who identified themselves as black and/or Hispanic and 30 percent of all AP exams earning scores of 3 or higher. Dalton High School and Southeast Whitfield High School were recognized in this category.

• AP STEM Schools: Those with students testing in at least two AP math courses and two AP science courses: Dalton High School and Northwest Whitfield High School were recognized.

• AP STEM Achievement Schools: Those with students testing in at least two AP math courses and two AP science courses and at least 40 percent of the exam scores on AP math and AP science exams earning scores of 3 or higher. Northwest Whitfield High School was recognized in this category.
