Whitfield County schools need ‘renters’ to be insured

Thinking of using a school for a church or civic function? Better make sure your liability insurance policy is in order.

Whitfield Board of Education members were briefed at their Monday meeting on a board policy that has been in place for several years but which officials said needs to be enforced uniformly throughout the district’s 23 schools.

John Shore, an underwriting manager for the Georgia School Boards Association, said that under the policy third parties like churches, civic organizations and participants in family reunions are not covered when they use school facilities for their own functions. Groups like booster clubs and parent-teacher organizations are covered, he said.

Board of Education Chairman Tim Trew said officials just want to make sure every principal and administrator is aware of the school system’s policy and is requiring the proper paperwork to be on file. Assistant Superintendent Richard Schoen said he will request county officials submit similar paperwork so the school system has it on file as its facilities are used by the county recreation department for various sporting events.

Officials said they also plan to request a list of how the county has provided services to the school system to compensate for the school district allowing the recreation department to use its facilities for games.
