Herd, Mahvi scholarship recipients

Robert A. Herd of Dalton was named one of 2,000 additional winners of National Merit Scholarships recently.

The scholarships are financed by colleges and universities.

Some 2,800 winners were announced in May, including Dalton resident and Baylor School (Chattanooga) graduate Mark P. Mahvi, who plans to study political science and received a scholarship to the University of Chicago.

Officials of each sponsor college selected their winners from among finalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program who will attend their institution. College-sponsored awards provide between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study at the institution financing the scholarship.

To be considered, students had to pass the 2007 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test as a junior. Students also had to submit a detailed application including an essay describing activities, interests and goals, and had to earn SAT scores that confirmed the qualifying test performance.

Herd, a graduate of Pinecrest Academy in Cumming, received a scholarship to the University of South Carolina. His probable career field is piano performance.
