Ever since news of the H1N1 flu outbreak started making headlines earlier this year, school officials across the country have been bracing for a new wave of the illness to hit this fall. But when Candy Chen, a second-grader at City Park School, succumbed to the illness Sept. 30, the importance of protecting students became even more paramount.
Jeannette Holley, a retired teacher who currently works as a substitute for Dalton Public and Whitfield County schools, says she’s seen firsthand how every school employee — from administrators to custodians — are doing everything they can to make sure no more students are lost.
“I would especially like to recognize everyone at City Park Elementary,” she said. “They have had a tough two weeks, and the death of one of their students will always be with them.”
Holley hopes all parents and others in the community remain vigilant by monitoring their families for flu-like symptoms and promptly get treatment should the need arise.
“For those who are not familiar with these symptoms, please call (the North Georgia Health District) at (706) 272-2342,” she said.
For their hard work in helping lessen the spread of H1N1 (or swine flu) among area students, The Daily Citizen names the employees of Dalton Public and Whitfield County schools as Citizens of the Week.

Ethics bill is a good first step
