Citizen of the Week: Dilbert Bryson

Imagine you’ve discovered you have what is believed to be an 8,000-year-old relic.

Do you hop on eBay and sell it to the highest bidder?

Do you keep it in the family for future generations to admire?

Or do you donate it to a nonprofit group dedicated to preserving the area’s history to allow a wider audience to enjoy the piece of yesteryear?

While we wouldn’t begrudge you for making any of those decisions, one local resident opted for the donation route.

Local resident Dilbert Bryson recently donated an approximately 8,000-year-old ax to the Prater’s Mill Foundation. Bryson’s grandfather, Jess Kile, found the ax near Lake Frances on what is now a pasture.

Jim Langford, president of the Coosawattee Foundation, identified the relic. He said it was “an early archaic, fully grooved ax dating from 5,000 to 6,000 B.C.” and said it was ‘made of slate, calling it thin, unusual and useful.”

Judy Alderman, president of the Prater’s Mill Foundation, said the group will display the ax at different events, including Cultural Heritage Day at the mill, when the mill is open to the public, and at local schools.

“We’re ecstatic,” Alderman said. “We don’t have many artifacts. This is a real treasure.”

For his willingness to share this remarkable piece of history with the residents of Whitfield County and beyond, The Daily Citizen names Dilbert Bryson Citizen of the Week.
