DALTON —
It is a rare honor to be selected as the youth of the year for any organization, let alone one that serves as many children as The Boys & Girls Clubs do.
To even be nominated, you have to show good character, good grades and a long history of community service.
Which is what you will find if you look at the accomplishments of Courtney Bauer, who was recently named as the Youth of the Year for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Gordon, Murray and Whitfield counties.
Courtney, 16, is a sophomore at North Murray High School and is a three-year member of the Boys & Girls Clubs. She has a 3.25 grade point average, was nominated for the Governor’s Honors Program and is an active member of the youth group at her local church. She also volunteers at a nursing home where she sings, plays board games and talks with the elderly residents. Bauer also volunteers with the Saturday Sack Program providing sack lunches on Saturdays to people in need.
She will now compete against other Boys & Girls Club members for the Georgia Youth of the Year title and a $1,000 scholarship from the Reader’s Digest Foundation.
If Courtney wins at the state competition, she will compete for the title of Southeast Region Youth of the Year and an additional $10,000 scholarship from Reader’s Digest. The five regional winners will advance to Washington, D.C., in September to compete for the title of National Youth of the Year. The National Youth of the Year receives an additional $15,000 college scholarship and is installed by the president in an Oval Office ceremony.
“Courtney is a strong young woman with a bright future,” said Robbie Slocumb, chief professional officer of the area Boys & Girls Clubs. “We are proud of her and know she will represent us well in the state competition.”
We are all proud of her accomplishments, and for them we are honored to name Courtney Bauer our Citizen of the Week.
