Dalton native Mitchell Boggs, and his wife Lele, will become “Pioneer” members of the Dalton State College athletic club and the baseball player plans to host a clinic next fall in his hometown.
The couple pledged at least $10,000 — required for the Pioneer status — to the school, athletic director Derek Waugh said. It is the first sign that Boggs has teamed up with Dalton State as the institution relaunches athletics after an extended pause.
“We’re really excited that he’s partnering with us,” Waugh said. He and I have only recently become friends, but I think he’s a great guy and great representative for Dalton.
The club is the main fundraising source for the Roadrunners athletic department as the institution re-launches athletics after an extended pause. Dalton State will begin a number of sports next fall, including: men’s basketball; women’s volleyball; competitive cheerleading; and men’s and women’s cross country, golf and tennis.
“Pioneer right now is the highest one we have,” Waugh said. “There’s been other people who have given us stuff, and they’ll obviously be named.”
There also will be a free clinic open to the public next fall, which Boggs will be involved with.
“We’ll have some of our coaches help out ... and we’ll have a lot of local coaches involved,” Waugh said. “It’ll be when (Boggs’) baseball season ends.”
Boggs, a former football and baseball player at Dalton High, is a relief pitcher for the St. Louis Cardinals and a member of the United States’ roster for the upcoming World Baseball Classic. Last season, he tied for fourth in the National League in appearances and ranked sixth among National League relievers with a 2.21 ERA. He was on the Cardinals’ 2011 World Series championship team.
