DSC Destinations offers November trip to Ireland

Previews of Ireland — the land of green hills, warm people, stately castles and rollicking fun — await those who attend the DSC Destinations information session on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the James E. Brown Center on the Dalton State College campus.

According to Carol Burton, coordinator of DSC Destinations, Dalton State’s travel/learning program, participants will learn plans of a November excursion to Ireland featuring luxury accommodations and shopping/museum opportunities, including a visit to the world-famous Waterford Crystal Visitors Center.

Shades of Ireland, a 10-day tour, is scheduled for November 3-12, 2009, and will take travelers sightseeing through Dublin, the “Fair City,” and for a fun-filled Irish House Party where everyone has the opportunity to join in the song and dance. From there, travelers will journey on to Kilkenny, Waterford and Killarney where they will have the opportunity to kiss the famous Blarney Stone.

A representative of Collette Vacations will be on hand to give a presentation on the Ireland excursion and to answer questions, Burton said. A core group is already set to go to Ireland, but a few seats still remain for others who might be interested in joining them.

Previous DSC Destinations groups have traveled to England, France, Wales and Italy.

“We only have really fun people on our trips,” Burton said. “Invariably folks who start out as merely fellow travelers come home as lifelong friends.”

The group will travel one of the most beautiful coastal routes in the world, the Ring of Kerr, which will wind through Killarney and Limerick to the stunning, 700-foot-high Cliffs of Moher for awe-inspiring views of the Atlantic and Aran Islands. A highlight of the trip will be an overnight stay at one of Kingscourt’s historic castles.

The Collette Vacations representative will also share details of a spring DSC Destinations trip to Frances & Bavaria, featuring the Oberammergau Passion Play. The 11-day tour is scheduled for May 28-June 7, 2010, Burton said. The tour begins in Paris with dinner at the Eiffel Tower followed by a beautiful cruise on the Seine River.

En route to Oberammergau, the group will stop in Nuremberg for a guided tour of the city. A local expert will provide commentary on the Rally Grounds where the Nazi Party held political rallies, and the Justice Palace, where the War Crimes Tribunal sat in 1946.

The citizens of the Bavarian village of Oberammergau began performance of the Passion Play in 1634. During the Thirty Years War, the village of Oberammergau was spared the Black Plague and for this reason, the villagers vowed that every 10 years they would give a play to honor the life of Christ. During the break of the performance, the DSC Destinations group will join fellow travelers for a farewell dinner celebrating the end of a memorable trip.

The Wednesday night information session is free, but registration is encouraged. Those with an interest in either trip are strongly urged to attend. To register, or for more information, call Carol Burton at (706) 272-4582 or e-mail cburton@daltonstate.edu.
