Dalton State announces Spring Fling events to community

DALTON — Dalton State College will celebrate the beginning of spring with a week-long program of events aimed at bringing students together for some good old-fashioned fun.

While most of the activities that comprise this year’s Spring Fling will revolve around student interests and participation, the Office of Student Activities is sponsoring two evening events that will be free and open to the public.

“Now that the Quadrangle has been completed and the weather is warmer, we can hold more events outside on the lawn near the bell tower,” says Jami Hall, director of student activities. “We hope some of these outdoor events will become annual traditions and that community members will join in on the fun.”

This spring, the part rock, part hip-hop, part funk and soul band Hey Monea!, formerly known as Hooked on Tonics, will perform live in concert on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Known for their popularity with college audiences, the group began touring nationally after their debut album “Do You Wanna” hit college radio stations in 2006. At 8 p.m. April 8, the campus will have its first movie on the grounds event when the recent release of “Sherlock Holmes” is shown on a projector screen in the Quadrangle.

The movie is being billed as a Family Fun Night event, as people of all ages are invited to attend. Popcorn and drinks will be served.

“These events will be open to everyone and will be great for students, their friends and families, and the community,” Hall says. “Those who come should remember to think of it like a tail-gating event and bring chairs or picnic blankets for seating.”

The grand finale of events during Spring Fling Week will be the Students vs. Alumni Basketball game, which will take place on April 10, beginning at 1:30 p.m. in Bandy Gymnasium.

“One of the highlights of the basketball game will be the unveiling of the new mascot,” Hall says, noting that a contest was held among the student body this year to come up with a sketch of the school’s mascot, the Roadrunner. “The drawing that was chosen to represent our mascot will be revealed during halftime. But the game itself should be lots of fun.”
