DALTON — Dalton State College must shave an additional $2.4 million from its fiscal year 2011 budget. To meet this number, college president John Schwenn outlined a number of cost-cutting moves. “Everything is on the table,” he said.
Proposals, which are not official, include:
• Eliminate social work, marketing, management and technology programs: No savings given.
• Cut 10 tenured faculty members, not fill seven open positions and not replace two slots: No savings given.
• Cap enrollment at 5,800 students: No savings given.
• Cut plant operations (including not cutting grass as often): No savings given.
• Add four more employee furlough days (from six to 10): No savings given.
• Eliminate all travel unless mandated by the state Board of Regents: No savings given.
• Make workers switch to the highest deductible health insurance plan: $500,000 savings.
• Delay opening the Whitfield Career Academy campus for one year: $150,000.
• Decrease library acquisitions: $150,000.
• Pay a flat rate for summer school instead of salary-based pay: $100,000.
• Close the Educational Technology Center: $100,000.
• Discontinue the Regents’ exam: $70,000.
• Decrease the freshman experience course: $50,000.
• Close the college for the last two weeks of the year: $40,000.
• In the summer session, go to a four-day, 10-hour week with campus closed from Friday through Sunday (the library would be open Sunday afternoon): $40,000.

Talking Birds
Matt Hamilton/The Daily Citizen Melvyn Ottinger draws a laugh from the crowd during Friday’s “Lunch and Learn” lecture at Dalton State College’s James E. Brown Center. Ottinger, who was the school’s first athletic director when it was still known as Dalton Junior College, talked about his experiences as the coach of Roadrunners men’s basketball from 1968-78, when his teams compiled a 231-78 record and twice advanced to the national championship tournament. The school is relaunching its athletic program, and the public will have a chance to interact with new Dalton State athletic director Derek Waugh and his family during a meet and greet from 4-6 p.m. Tuesday at the James E. Brown Center.
