Dalton will be getting a Petco, and perhaps some other stores, on Shugart Road near Kohl’s.
Site plans on the website of the property’s owner, RealtyLink, appeared to show Petco, Aspen Dental, Verizon, Mattress Firm and Academy Sports and Outdoors coming to the Kohl’s shopping center.
Officials at RealtyLink’s corporate office in Greenville, S.C., did not immediately return a telephone message on Tuesday. Greater Dalton Chamber of Commerce President Brian Anderson said he spoke to the officials at RealtyLink Tuesday afternoon and the only store that is definitely coming is Petco.
“What you see on the website is only an artist’s rendition. There is nothing signed,” Anderson said. “They are still trying to recruit restaurants, telecom and sporting goods.”
Whitfield County Building Inspections Administrator Greg Williams said RealtyLink has applied for a building permit for Petco.
“That’s the only one we have anything for,” Williams said. “There are just minor revisions to do to the plan and we’ll approve the permit. Then it will be up to the contractor, and I guess the weather, as to when they start and how long it takes (to build the Petco).”
According to the company’s website (petco.com), the closest Petco to Dalton currently is on Gunbarrel Road near Hamilton Place Mall in Chattanooga.
Dalton Mayor David Pennington said he had heard the developers are trying to land Academy Sports but has not learned of any confirmation.
“I knew they were about to start the second phase,” he said.
“Obviously, we welcome any new retail. I’m glad to hear we will be getting a Petco,” Pennington added. “But that Academy Sports is something we were really looking for. That would be a big one.”
