A North Georgia Career Expo and Job Fair will be at the Northwest Georgia Trade and Convention Center on Thursday from 1 to 5 p.m. The list of employers now committed to participate is approaching 70, the state Department of Labor said.
The department offers these tips:
Before the Job Fair
• Set realistic expectations — not all job seekers will be hired on the spot. This is an opportunity to learn more about companies and their hiring needs and to network with their representatives. It is the first step in the process of finding your next position.
• Prepare a resume and bring copies of it with you to give to prospective company representatives.
• Dress professionally for the job you would like to have.
• Be prepared and practice sharing your work experience, education and position desired in three or four sentences.
At the Job Fair
• Arrive early, attend the orientation, study the map and use your time wisely.
• Make personal contact with company representatives and ask for business cards.
• Attend workshops to learn more about Georgia Work$, Job Search in a Recession, Interviewing Tips and Techniques, Career Planning for Future Success and eResumes.
• Visit the Resume Critique area for suggestions to strengthen your resume.
• Learn more about community resources and service providers by visiting their booths. They will provide information about food, housing, clothing and other supportive services.
• Speak with technical, trade school and college representatives to learn about training opportunities and financial aid.
• Use computers for online job searches and resume preparation.
• Certified vocational counselors will be available to help people with disabilities and assistive technology will be provided along with sign language interpreters for all workshops, if needed.
• Spanish translators will be available to assist attendees.
After the Job Fair
Send notes or e-mails to company representatives, thanking them for taking the time to talk with you. State your interest and qualifications for a position with that company.
• Complete any online job application required by a company.
• Visit the Georgia Department of Labor Web site (www.dol.state.ga.us) for additional job postings.
