CHATTANOOGA — Finding a job in today’s job market can be difficult, and it can often be especially challenging if you are a senior. Stressing that age is an asset and experience a benefit, the Prime Timer’s Career Expo will offer older adults the opportunity to meet with representatives from local businesses and educational workshops to assist them in their job search.
The Prime Timer’s Career Expo will be Thursday, May 7, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Chattanooga State Technical Community College Center for Business, Industry and Health (the former Olan Mills building on Amnicola Highway). Workshops will include Interview Skills, Resume Writing, Searching for Jobs Online, Combating the Myths of Older Workers, Generations … Bridge the Gap, Introduction to WorkKeys and Older Workers, Younger Bosses.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that the share of the labor force aged 55 and older, currently at 17 percent, is rising rapidly and by 2020 is projected to be nearly 24 percent. This population of mature workers includes individuals who are retiring at young ages and want second careers, individuals who want to work beyond the age of 65 and those individuals who need another source to supplement their income. Keeping these workers employed makes good business sense. A report prepared for AARP by Towers Perrin, The Business Case for Workers Age 50+, found that older workers are more motivated to exceed expectations on the job than their younger counterparts.
