Job growth initiative to begin here

The boards of directors for the Greater Dalton Chamber of Commerce and the Dalton-Whitfield County Joint Development Authority have endorsed a new plan for economic development in Dalton and Whitfield County. Known as Grow Greater Dalton 2.0, this job creation and workforce initiative is a continuation of the Grow Greater Dalton program begun in 2009.

During the first four years of the original Grow Greater Dalton, results included 1,000 new jobs, $200 million in capital investment, the creation of a new industrial park and workforce development initiatives.

The new initiative is built around the recommendations of a feasibility study conducted this past summer and affirms the commitment for economic development by the business community and the city of Dalton and Whitfield County.

“The Chamber of Commerce board was pleased to learn of the encouraging results from the interviews conducted as part of the feasibility study,” said Bryan McAllister, chairman of the Greater Dalton Chamber of Commerce. “The business leadership of Greater Dalton recognizes the importance of a strong economic development program and has voiced their support for Grow Greater Dalton 2.0.”

Grow Greater Dalton 2.0 will require funding in the range of $3 million to be raised from the business community with support of both city and county governments. The program, expected to be rolled out in early 2013, will include enhanced business recruitment, resulting in 1,000 new jobs and a comprehensive workforce development plan.

“The results from the first phase have pleased the original investors and we expect to continue the great success in the second phase,” said Andy Walker, chairman of the Dalton-Whitfield County Joint Development Authority.

As the general development agency for Dalton and Whitfield County, the authority is a public-private partnership whose primary goal is to promote economic growth and stability by supporting existing businesses, targeting new businesses and attracting new investment into the community.
