The Cartersville office of the Georgia Department of Labor recently named Shaw Industries as its 2009 Employer of the Year. This recognition is based on the company hiring 86 military veterans as full-time employees to work within Bartow and Paulding counties.
Shaw’s commercial carpet tile facility, Plant 15, was also recognized by the U.S. Army with a certificate of appreciation for the facility’s support of Sgt. 1st Class Starrann Wise as part of the Army’s Freedom Team Salute program. While Wise, who works in the precoat area of Plant 15, was on military leave for three years traveling with the U.S. Army band, her coworkers actively supported her with letters, gifts and reminders from home.
Shaw employees were also recognized for their support of veterans. Rick Lanham, the veteran’s representative with the Department of Labor, named Bridget Bailey, recruiting manager, and Adam Longino, senior human resources manager, as honorary veterans for their individual support of the military. Longino was also recognized as a Patriotic Employer by the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve for communicating with and supporting Shaw employee Capt. Stephen “Matt” Johnston and his family while he served in Afghanistan.
“The freedoms that we enjoy every day come at a price,” said Paul Richard, vice president of human resources. “Shaw Industries is proud of our teammates and their family members who are actively protecting and serving our country. We are grateful to them and to all of our veterans for their important contributions and service. Shaw associates are tireless in their efforts to give back to their communities. These recognitions from the Department of Labor and the Army are a testament to the quality and dedication of our people.”
According to Jerry Garland, district II director of the Georgia Department of Labor, Shaw Industries is setting the example for other businesses in Bartow and Paulding counties.
“Shaw is leading the way in terms of veteran hiring,” Garland said. “Veterans draw upon their unique experiences to bring dedication and discipline to the workplace. On behalf of the Georgia Department of Labor, we wish Shaw continued success, growth and prosperity.”
